Who I’ll be watching in the Tour de France

The Tour de France starts tomorrow. I love it. Dual views: men in Spandex, French countryside. What’s not to like? During the Tour, my husband has it on non-stop. The six hour live broadcast, the three hour prime time broadcast, for three weeks my living room will be all spandex all the time.

I love July.

Men en masse in spandex is great but in particular I’ll be watching for…this guy.winning worlds

Peter Sagan, world champion, winner of the Tour’s green points jersey the last four years in a row. He oozes sex appeal – to me. But you be the judge.

It’s fair to say he’s the Tom Brady, the David Beckam of the cycling world with his charisma, his long hair and his wheelies.

Last year he made a mock gun out of his Tour trophy. At the world championships, he leaped off the stage, complete with a heal kick, to hug his brother on the sidelines. His older traditions of pinching models’ bottoms, signing chicks boobs, and kissing girls on the roadside have tamed since he married his girlfriend last fall.

That’s him kissing her after he won world champion. Aw!

The last two years, he hasn’t won a single Tour stage. But with the rainbow world champion jersey on his back (and maybe the whole getting married thing helped), he’s been dominating races all spring and is sure to keep up the winning streak. Look for him to take victories on the flat sprint stages.

I’d be lying if I didn’t admit this guy was seeeeeerious inspiration for Racing To You. I have a Pinterest board basically dedicated to him.

Other riders to watch: American Tejay Van Garderen is the best U.S. hopeful for an overall Tour winner. But also the amazing Taylor Phinney (who I find particularly enjoyable to watch) is sure to place well in the time trial stages.

See you at the Tour! I’m sure I’ll be tweeting about it way to much. Feel free to chat back!
